Macquarie House is an important part of Tasmania’s stagecoach history. In 1830, James Crear built a stone house with convict labour on land he received as a land grant in 1824. Originally a private residence, it was soon used as an Inn to cater to the booming coach transport industry operating between Hobart and Launceston. In 1870, the Inn closed and reverted back to a private home.
